The History of Education Society awards a prize of $1000 biennially to the author of an article judged to be the most distinguished scholarly essay in educational history—broadly defined to cover a wide range of educational and cultural institutions inside and outside the United States, including work on schools and universities, teachers, students, and families—published in any scholarly journal over the previous two-year period (January 2022 to December 2025, inclusive).
The deadline for submissions is May 31, 2026.
Entrants should e-mail a published copy of the article and a one-page vita as separate attachments (in Microsoft Word or as pdf files) to the committee chair, Jake Hardesty (jhardesty@rockford.edu). Please feel free to write with any other questions as well.
Winners are encouraged to attend the Society’s annual meeting, where the award will be presented with a brief synopsis of the article. The 2025 HES meeting will be Thursday, November 5th – Sunday, November 8th, in Portland, Oregon. For more information about the annual meeting, go to http://www.historyofeducation.org
