Welcome to the History of Education Society
A NOTE FROM ANN MARIE RYAN
regarding a symposium in Chicago, scheduled the Tuesday prior to the HES 2011 conference.
What will it take to change the way we think about teaching history?
Tuesday, November 1, 6:00-9:00 p.m.
As history education moves into a new era, inquiry skills such as research, argumentation, and source analysis are becoming a greater part of the curriculum. How can teachers successfully teach these skills in the classroom? Professor Bruce VanSledright (University of North Carolina-Charlotte) will address the practical difficulties and opportunities discussed in his recent book The Challenge of Rethinking History Education. A panel of successful, experienced high school history teachers will also discuss the book in relation to their own inquiry-based classroom practice. The program will begin with a reception, and an opportunity to visit Facing Freedom and other exhibitions. CPDUs, copies of the book for purchase, and special giveaways will be available.
Cost: $5
